Clifton Jacksdale
Local football star Cliff Jacksdale decided he wanted to dedicate some of his earnings and prize money to benefit budding young sports stars of the future. He started a distribution fund called the “Sports Stars of the Future Fund”, to support young talented children interested in sports across the county.
Cliff was brought up in one of the old coalfields and knows first hand how difficult it is to keep your motivation and focus when there is no money available to buy new boots and kit. A wealthy man spotted Cliff, saw his sporting potential and became his benefactor. Cliff was given small sums of money which enabled him to play in competitions and more importantly go for trials at Nottingham Forest which became the start of his international career.
Cliff has a constant stream of letters from young footballers who have heard his story. He finds their approaches challenging as he wants to help but has struggled to know how to respond. By starting a fund with Nottinghamshire Community Foundation, Cliff found he could give money through the Foundation, and is now able to send a postcard explaining that the Foundation handle his own personal fund to which individuals can apply for a grant.
Cliff wanted to see how this fund would work, so started a distribution fund of £30,000 which would distribute grants twice a year over a 3 year period. He said that he wanted to support children interested in all sports, and would be happy to make grants of up to £2,500 to both groups working with children or individuals. The Community Foundation handles his entire grant making and decision making but Cliff enjoys the fact that he can log in to his fund on their website and keep up-to-date with the progress of his fund and the grantmaking.
He requests that every applicant keeps in touch through the Foundation to let him know how they are getting on. He is now considering having an endowment fund because in a short time he has been able to see the very real impact his giving has made and wants to continue this work for the future.
